The Perth Mint of Australia has long been producing coins that draw attention to the vast array of wild creatures living on the continent. Despite Australia arguably being most well-known for the Kangaroo, another animal, the Koala, is right up there on the list of iconic Australian animals. The 2013 1 oz Australian Silver Koala proof coin is made with high relief, or, in other words, a design that actually and figuratively jumps off the coin’s face. The raised design allows the image on the coin to seem that much more lifelike.
One of the most well-known facets of information about koalas is that they love to dine on eucalyptus leaves. As such, the design of the 2013 1 oz Silver Koala proof coin depicts a koala sifting through a small patch of eucalyptus bushes. Looking for the perfect midday snack, the detail of the coin is such that every ruffle in the koala’s fur is discernible. Above the koala’s image is a raised inscription which reads “Australian Koala” while the 1 oz weight and .999 purity indications can be found on the bottom of the reverse. Typical of a Perth-produced coin, the obverse side plays host to the profile image of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Surround the Queen’s image are inscriptions which read “Elizabeth II”, “Australia”, and “2013.”
Due to the uniqueness of this coin, limited mintage, and high purity, it should come as no surprise that it is highly sought after by both collectors and investors around the world. All of Perth’s coins feature stunning designs, but few are as tangible as the one on this high relief coin.
