The deep-cameo finish speaks to the contrast between the design sets and the background field. The designs of Walking Liberty and the heraldic eagle are finished in strong, frosted matte, while the background fields are deeply-mirrored and clear.
On the obverse of the coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 depiction of Lady Liberty. The reverse features the modern image of the heraldic eagle created by US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti in 1986.
The United States Mint produces all of its American Silver Eagle coins today at the West Point Mint. This includes the bullion, proof, and burnished versions. In addition, the West Point Mint handles production of all American Gold Eagle and American Gold Buffalo coins.
